I do this. My writing comes in spurts. Sometimes I'd rather be doing something else, like watching movies. Or going outside now that the weather is getting nicer. I do live in Oregon, so that changes minute to minute. It's never that I don't have something to say because, let's face it, I always have something to say.
Speaking of movies, I have been devouring films lately LIKE CRAZY. Working my way backwards from current Oscar winners to past Oscar winners, and everything in between. When I get home from work, I like to settle in and watch something. So rather than flipping through 850,000 cable channels or Netflix movies, I keep a stack of rented DVDs around.
I've developed this system where I watch all the movie previews, keep a running list on my phone. Then, I go in to my library account and see which DVDs I can get there, and put as many on hold as I can. If I really, really want to watch them I will go to Redbox or the local video store. Yes, I live about 5 minutes from an actual video store. They also sell ice cream, treats and espresso.
As a writer, that is how I learn about things. Some movies I love, some I hate and some are meh. But all of them influence me in some way. And now, instead of wasting tons of time figuring out what to watch, I'm watching all those movies I promised myself I would and never did.
Everything is borrowed from something else, and anything we have ever experienced will come out somewhere in our art. Plus, using the library is free! For a little delayed gratification, I save a ton of money. And I am definitely about that.
